About the Program

Education is at the core of the Band Camp Reimagined program. Created in 2017 as the brainchild of master educators John Seaton and Dr. Charles A. Maguire, this student-centric camp implements the most innovative and modern music training techniques found today. Open to any student who has completed at least one year of band, the innovative masterclasses and performances of BCR cultivate in each member a sense of responsibility, commitment, self-discipline, confidence, and poise—critical ingredients for success in any field. The high standards of artistry foster a more musical and empathetic world as students return home to their respective programs as beacons of change.

Session Title: #Shapingphrases...Rehearsal Techniques Toward Meaningful Expression

Conductors of all genres have long been aware of the importance of the rehearsal process. However, what does it really mean to actively rehearse? This interactive session for all conductor types put participants in the center of the experience. Using composer advocacy, literal vs. expressive notation, and the teaching of a few musical masters as sources of inspiration, this session will deliver efficient and meaningful techniques that will re-energize your teaching and ignite purpose behind the music making process.

Session Title: MEAN what you SHOW...A Conductor's Tune-Up!
Automobile experts recommend that every 3,000 miles we take our vehicle in for service. So how long should we wait as conductors? Our non-verbal communication skills, like our vehicles, need tuning to maximize our expressive abilities on the podium. This interactive session for conductors of all levels will run your technique through a diagnostic and provide you with ways to change your own spark plugs so that you can get the most out of your conducting.

Session Title: On My Way to Rehearsal: Activation of a Teaching Philosophy

Conductors and musicians have long been aware of the importance of the rehearsal process. However, we often fail to consider the social, emotional, musical, and cultural implications that must be considered on the way there. This interactive keynote aims to question our personal bias towards the rehearsal process, while gaining awareness and techniques that put the needs of the student’s we serve first.

Session Title: Wind Music for the Cause
with co-presenter Dr. William L. Lake Jr.
Teachers spend a great deal of time searching for repertoire worthy of study for their ensembles. After careful consideration of instrumentation, time constraints for festivals/contest, and the latest published new music only one thing is left, selecting music with purpose. This interactive session for music educators advocates for a creative way of thinking that encourages the selection of repertoire that speaks to the experiences that bind all who listens. The presentation will work toward creating an environment with meaningful dialog, expression, and emotional commitment for our ensembles through the selection of wind music, for the cause.
